September 2011

Friends of Southwestern College,

Even though the State mandated that all community colleges reduce the number of courses they offer due to State budget cuts, our enrollments are up to more than 20,000 students.   With fewer courses offered, this means more students are enrolling in fewer units.  The demand exceeds what we can provide.   Additional 8-week and 10-week courses will be offered at all of the SWC sites, affording students the opportunity to add classes later in the semester.

The Governing Board participated in a Southwestern College Budget Workshop on August 24, 2011, reviewing the specifics of the budget and obtaining information from the College's administration regarding plans to reduce the budget even more significantly over the next 3 years so that our expenses do not exceed our revenue.

For 2011-12, the College had to cut $5 million to begin to address budget reductions.

Other budget reductions will take place throughout the year, in anticipation of having mid-year cuts and possible additional course offerings as anticipated financial pressures at the State level impact SWC and all community colleges.

Examples of further budget reductions include but are not limited to:

On a more upbeat note, the Governing Board is in the final stages of interviewing and selecting the permanent Superintendent/President for Southwestern College.

A thorough process has taken place which included a broad applicant pool, applicant screening, 1st Level interviews, reference checks, Public Forums, and 2nd Level final interviews.

If all goes according to plan, it is anticipated that an announcement will be made no later than mid-October.

Thank you to all from faculty, classified, administration and the community who have participated in the selection process.  This is one of the most important decisions our Board will ever make and we appreciate our community’s support.

Sincerely,

Tim Nader
Governing Board President
