Governing Board President
Friends of Southwestern College,
We are proud to introduce our new Trustee, Humberto Peraza.
As you know, former Trustee Nick Aguilar retired in June 2011. Rather than spend more than $1 million on a special election, the Governing Board voted to make a provisional appointment which extends to the next Board election in November 2012.
Peraza is a former Regional Director to Senator Barbara Boxer (D - CA), District Chief of Staff to Congressman Bob Filner (D - CA - 51) and Senior Policy Advisor to former San Diego City Council President Ben Hueso. He also serves on the boards for Planned Parenthood, the League of Conservation Voters San Diego and MOVE SD.
The Board ran an open and thorough selection process leading to Peraza’s selection. It convened three public meetings: One on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, to formalize the selection process; one on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, for all candidates to speak and the Board to select finalists; and two on Monday, August 8, and Tuesday, August 9, to learn more about those finalists. Following questions from Board members, students, faculty, classified staff and administrators, the Board chose Peraza.
I have known Humberto Peraza for several years and believe he will be an excellent part of our team here at Southwestern College. He works well with a variety of people and will help us continue the positive teamwork our Governing Board and college community have established.
The Board received more than 25 applications for Peraza’s seat. I want to thank all the individuals who put forth their energy and ideas to serve our students. The high level of interest in our College District shows how much people care about SWC’s programs and place in this community.
With a full Governing Board in place, our attention turns to fall. The State has limited its support for community colleges and the recent debt-limit debate has made the situation more tenuous: the future of student aid is now being debated in Washington. Our constituent-based Budget Committee worked hard to ensure we have funding where it matters most: classes, programs and student services. We are offering a strong complement of classes in the fall, mixing the basic skills our students need with the cutting-edge and workforce training programs they demand.
Our final 2011–12 budget is slated for approval at the Wednesday, September 14 Board meeting. We encourage you to attend a special Board meeting and public hearing on Wednesday, August 24 to learn more and express your views on the College District’s budget.
We are also proud to be offering Friday and Saturday classes at our Higher Education Centers in National City and San Ysidro. Our Centers are home to some of the College District’s signature programs, from dental hygiene and medical laboratory technology to our police academy. If we increase our student enrollment at these Centers, we will qualify for several million dollars in new State funding, creating new resources for our students. Learn more on our web site.
Here’s to a great semester – and to the dedicated students, faculty, staff and administrators who will bring it about.
