The following are subject-oriented Web sites. These sites are good starting points for exploring United States Government resources on the Internet.

Federal Government
  • White House The official page of the President of the United States. Includes news, press briefings, presidential proclamations, executive orders, appointments, photographs, interviews, and history.
  • United States Senate includes information about bills that are pending, who your senators are and their e-mail addresses, and some trivia as well. You can also get some background information on the institution of the Senate..
  • House of Representatives Homepage for the United States House of Representatives.
  • Supreme Court of the United States The Supreme Court's official site provides general information, opinions, term orders, argument calendar, schedules, court rules, biographies of current and past justices, architectural details, and press releases..
  • United States General Accountability Office An independent, nonpartisan agency that works for Congress. Often called the "congressional watchdog," GEO investigates how the federal government spends taxpayer dollars.
  • Thomas: Legislative Information on the Internet Access to the full texts of bills and laws from the United States Congress and proposed legislation.
  • An online locator service for a comprehensive inventory of information disseminated by the Federal Government." The site provides access to searchable databases of federal government resources, and government Web sites.
  • Project Vote Smart provides backgrounds information, issue positions, voting records, campaign finances and performance on political candidates and officials.
  • Presidents of the U.S. Background information, historical documents, notable events, and points of interest on each of the presidents.
  • laws and Regulations Find federal and state laws and regulations.
State Government
  • California State Government Official Web site for the state of California.
  • California State Senate includes home pages, addresses, committees, legislation, senate district maps, and more.
  • California State Assembly provides biographical information, addresses, committees, legislation, district finder, and more.
  • American Law Sources On-line A collection of free legal resources for the United States (both federal and individual states), Canada, and Mexico. The documents include codes, cases, constitutions, and legislation.
  • Full-text state statutes and legislation Seeks to link to sites containing full-text state constitutions, statutes (called codes or compiled laws in some states), legislation (bills, amendments, etc.), session laws (bills that have become laws), and administrative rules.
