American Sign Language
At Southwestern College, we offer a two semester sequence in American Sign Language. Since it is assumed that no ASL has been formally studied, these classes follow a sequence that builds language skills, scaffolding on what has been studied in previous semesters. The ASL program includes the following two courses:
These classes offer an introduction to the language of signs and manual communication methods used by hearing-impaired persons in the United States. The first course provides a basis of communication between hearing and hearing-impaired individuals. In addition, it forms a base of increased awareness of deafness and other related issues to the deaf. The second course in this series is designed to provide increased proficiency in sign language and finger spelling, including communication of the complex messages, idiomatic expressions, subtleties and nuances of language.
