Melanie Durkin

Melanie Durkin is a San Diego native. She received her Bachelorís degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara.  After college she completed fitness certifications in group exercise, personal training and nutrition counseling. For three years prior to graduate school, she worked in many health clubs is San Diego and Los Angeles teaching exercise classes, personal training, and serving as a nutrition counselor. In 1998 she completed her Masterís degree at San Diego State University in Exercise and Nutrition Science. After completing her Masterís degree she finished a comprehensive Pilates certification through West Coast Pilates and is trained in both mat and Pilates equipment. The most recent certification she is in the process of obtaining is in Yoga through Yogafit. She has completed Level 1 and Level 2 and currently working on her Level 3 certification. She is a full time instructor at Southwestern College in the school of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics. She teaches a variety of fitness classes each semester such as step training, kick-boxing, body sculpting, cross training fitness, weight training, and Yoga. In addition to fitness activity classes, Melanie also teaches Health, Fitness Assessment, and Techniques in Exercise Leadership. She is currently serving as Program Coordinator of the Fitness Specialist Program. In addition to her work at Southwestern College, Melanie owns Fitness Quest 10 with her husband and is the proud mom of two boys, Luke and Brady.

Brad Platt M.S.

After attending Southwestern, Brad went on to receive a B.S. in Kinesiology from San Diego State University. After college he owned a personal training and massage therapy business for twelve years. During that time he also opened up his own tanning salon. Brad returned to school and has recently completed his Masters degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University. Brad is in his third year as an adjunct instructor at Southwestern. His passion is teaching and he enjoys imparting that love and knowledge to his students. He also enjoys working out, reading, and spending weekends at the beach with his wife and his daughter....it's a weekly ritual and part of his familyís active lifestyle.



Mike Smith

Mike Smith
Adjunct Instructor of Health & Exercise Science

Mike Smith is an adjunct instructor in the Health and Exercise Science Departments at Southwestern. He teaches Health, Emergency Response classes, and CPR.  He has a BSN from Creighton University and an MPH from San Diego State.  He is also ACE certified as a personal trainer and a group exercise instructor as well.  His sport specialty is competitive cycling (USA Cycling) and was a former middle distance runner.  He enjoys teaching indoor cycling and mat pilates.  Hobbies include African drumming (you can see him play on Sundays at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park).

 



Shannon von Guenthner

Shannon von Guenthner is an adjunct instructor as well as assistant Track & Field and Cross-Country coach here at Southwestern. She also serves as the Sports Information Director for the college. Shannon has a B.A. in Psychology from Western Washington University and a B.S. in Exercise Science from Eastern Washington University. While in college she became an ACE certified Personal Trainer as well as a certified Indoor Cycling Instructor. After graduating she went on to get her Masters in Sport & Exercise Psychology from Eastern Washington University. As a graduate assistant she taught undergraduate classes in  health, exercise science, and sport psychology. She was also the assistant sprint coach for the university track team. Shannon moved to California in 2003 where she served as a mental skills consultant for the USA Cross-Country Ski Team and as a Health & Fitness Director at a YMCA for 3 years before making a return to teaching and coaching. She and her husband enjoy road biking, windsurfing and most recently they have begun training for sprint triathlons.

Dennis Petrucci
Athletic Trainer

Dennis comes to Southwestern bringing the experience of working with many professional or elite level athletes and teams. He has his A.T.C. (Certified Athletic Trainer from the National Athletic Trainers Association) and a C.S.C.S. certificate as a Strength & Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength & Conditioning Association.

Dennis started his athletic training career at San Diego State University where he received his Bachelor of Science. He then went on to Ohio State University to receive his Master of Arts. As a graduate assistant athletic trainer he worked with several of the Ohio State sports including football, hockey and baseball.  After graduating he began working with professional athletes including several NFL players and eventually returned to San Diego to work with the minor league professional basketball team, the Stingrays, as their Head Athletic Trainer. While there Dennis worked with athletes such as Master P and Magic Johnson. The following year he moved to work as a full time Assistant Athletic Trainer at Pepperdine University where he had opportunities to work with many Olympic level volleyball players and Pro beach volleyball players. He then came back to San Diego to be the Head Athletic Trainer for the San Diego Gulls, a minor league professional hockey team. While with the team they won a national championship and he was  able to work with many athletes in the National Hockey League (NHL). During the Gulls off-season Dennis has also worked with other San Diego area professional teams including the San Diego Spirit, Gauchos, Flash and Sockers. He also worked a few tours as the Head Athletic Trainer for the United States National Rugby Team when they played against some of the best teams in the world such as Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. 

He is married to wife, Christina.
