Chelsea Ball Honored as Female PCAC Athlete of the Week

Southwestern College basketball player Chelsea Ball has been named Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Athlete of the Week for the week that ended on Sunday.

Ball, a 5-foot, 10-inch freshman forward from El Cajon Valley High School, helped lead the Jaguars to a 59-53 victory over MiraCosta with 16 points, 12 rebounds and a blocked shot. She had an 8-for-10 shooting night. She came back to help lead the way in an 86-59 win over San Diego City College by scoring 12 points and hauling in 13 rebounds.

Honorable mention went to basketball players Alliya Pinckney (Palomar), Mikaela Stanton (Palomar), Alexis Harris (Southwestern) and Jonalynn Fuertes (Grossmont).

Pinckney, a sophomore guard from Mt. Carmel High School who shared Athlete of the Week honors last week, led the first-place Comets to a come-from-behind 80-77 win over San Diego City with 23 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. She also scored eight second-half points to help cement a 72-50 victory vs. Imperial Valley.


Stanton, a 5-foot-4 freshman guard out of Vista High School, scored 17 points and drained five 3-pointers in the Comets’ win over IVC.

Harris, a 5-foot-9 freshman guard from San Diego High School, scored 15 points and dished off five assists for Southwestern against MiraCosta. She had 13 points and six rebounds vs. City College.

Fuertes, a 5-foot-2 freshman guard from Sweetwater High School who received the Athlete of the Week award for the week that ended Dec. 30, scored 11 points as Grossmont defeated Imperial Valley 57-44. She came back with 16 points and six rebounds as the Griffins downed defending conference champion San Diego Mesa 54-40.
