Pre Tests

The college recognizes that some students acquire knowledge and competence through non-academic settings. Prerequisites are designed to ensure students' readiness to continue their EMS careers. A strong foundation in EMT knowledge, math, terminology and human anatomy and physiology (A&P) is critical for success in the paramedic program. The following information will assist you in meeting program prerequisites::
  • College level math and reading: Tests are arranged through the admissions office. The tests are held on campus frequently and at convenient times. Paramedic students must score the following minimums on placement tests:

  • Algebra readiness test demonstrates eligibility for Math 45 or higher. OR
  • Grade of "C" or better in Math 35 or higher numbered course OR
  • Equivalent as demonstrated by an approved petition

  • Placement test shows eligibility for English 158 OR
  • Grade of "C" or better in English 156 OR
  • Transcript indicating an earned associate or baccalaureate degree OR
  • Equivalent as demonstrated by an approved petition

Medical Math: A basic understanding of decimals, fractions and the metric system is assumed. A short math quiz is required in addition to the math college placement test. A minimum score of 80% is required; retake is permitted.

Medical Terminology: Medical terminology is the "lingo" of medicine. A full course in medical terminology is highly recommended. A challenge exam is available for students who feel they have a good understanding of body terms, root words, prefixes and suffixes. Passing score on this challenge exam is 80%, retake is permitted.

A&P: The A&P challenge test is for students who have studied the topic but may lack college credit for learning. The test is a difficult one, comparable to a final exam in a college level A&P class. If you have never taken A&P you will not be able to pass this test. No retest is permitted, passing score is 70%. Applicants are encouraged to review their A&P course notes and/or college textbook. All candidates are required to pass an anatomy & physiology review (competency) exam.

EMT Knowledge Test: In order to be successful in paramedic school, potential students must have a strong knowledge base at the EMT1 level. This competency can be documented with a recent recertification test. This test must be passed within 3 months of application date. The EMT knowledge pretest covers the National Scope of Practice for EMT-1. Applicants are encouraged to review an EMT text or complete a workbook exam. (EMT texts and workbooks are available in the college bookstore and library.) Passing score is 70% and retests are permitted. In addition, after successful completion of ALL written tests, candidates will be scheduled for a PRACTICAL (SCENARIO BASED) EMT exam. The test is pass/fail.
