Latest News

Southwestern College (SWC) recently welcomed an accreditation site visit from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (“Commission”) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).  The accreditation site visits are routine for all community colleges in California and take place in six-year cycles for colleges to assess their effectiveness and reaffirm their accreditation status.

In preparation of the site visit, Southwestern College conducted and submitted a thorough self-study of the institution and its effectiveness.  During this process, the College discovered deficiencies from past Commission visits dating as far back as 1996 and 2003.  As anticipated, the Commission has placed an accreditation sanction of probation status on the College.  The Commission requests that the College address deficiencies in several areas. Southwestern College has until October 15, 2010 to provide  an initial response to some of the concerns and until October 2011 to resolve all the concerns. The College is working with the Commission to address the recommendations and expects to have its accreditation status reaffirmed within the timeline prescribed by the Commission.

Please rest assured that a probation status does NOT affect students’ current transfer credits/eligibility, degrees/certificates, academic programs, financial aid, and other student services.

The information provided on this website is intended to keep SWC’s students, faculty, staff and community informed about its status and efforts to remove the institution from probation status. There are links to accreditation documents, including a FAQ page to answer questions or concerns.  The College intends to keep everyone informed regarding the  progress on the Commission’s recommendations as they are addressed so please visit this website for the latest information.
