Prop AA

Southwestern College’s $89 million Prop AA bond continues to provide educational resources for residents of the South Bay. Recently, the bond funded construction of the College’s newest facility, the Higher Education Center at Otay Mesa.

Located in the heart of the burgeoning Otay Mesa community, the new facility is home to a number of signature programs including the Police Academy, Environmental Technology, Nursing, Fire Science Technology, and Paramedic/Emergency Medical Technician. The Center cost approximately $25 million to build and has a capacity to serve 5,000 students. It opened in August 2007 with 1,800 students.

In addition, Prop AA monies are being used to fund the construction of a new facility in San Ysidro. The Higher Education Center at San Ysidro is currently closed and will reopen in spring 2009. The new $5.6 million state-of-the-art facility will be able to serve approximately 2,000 students and meet the current demand for higher education in the region. The planned 18,000 square-foot, two-story center will replace the original one-story, 7,500 sq. ft. temporary building, which has been in place since 1988. The new center will be built on the current site and will have more classrooms, computer labs, and improved student facilities.
