Southwestern College Student Earns $10,500
National Science Foundation Scholarship
CHULA VISTA, CA – Southwestern College today announced that Frank Sanchez, a Mechanical Engineering major in the College District’s Math, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Program, was awarded a $10,500 National Science Foundation (NSF) scholarship to transfer to a four-year institution. The award assists students who transfer and plan to earn a math-based degree.
“The MESA Program has allowed this opportunity to happen for me. Thank you to my family, MESA and everyone who is contributing to my education and success. I could not have pursued my goals without the support of my family,” Sanchez said. “The NSF scholarship allows me to focus more on my studies without worrying too much about my finances.”
Students receive this NSF scholarship based on academic performance, leadership, MESA involvement and financial need. Rising sophomores receive up to $12,500 over four years and transfer-ready students receive up to $10,500 over three years. Nearly 99 percent of MESA community college students who transfer to four-year institutions pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“We’re proud of Frank Sanchez – and our MESA program. We continue to offer first-class training in the sciences, training that helps our students transfer and launch their careers,” Interim Superintendent/President Denise Whittaker said. “We know our country will need a growing number of scientists and engineers and are glad we have such talented faculty and staff dedicated to training them.”
In April 2011, two hundred local community college students from the San Diego City and Southwestern Colleges’ MESA program received free, state-of-the-art laptops to train local residents on computer literacy. Students will teach individuals, who lack access to or knowledge of the Internet, how to apply for college, find a job, access health and finance resources and engage with social networks.
