GRADUATES OF SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM OUTPACE PASS RATE ON NATIONAL EXAM
CHULA VISTA, CA – Southwestern College today announced the first graduates of its nationally-accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program achieved a 90 percent pass rate on the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) national board exam, outpacing the national average of 71 percent. More than 2,600 total candidates took the exam.
“Southwestern College’s MLT program continues to set the pace as a leader in its field,” Interim Superintendent/President Whittaker said. “Our MLT program trains students for good-paying jobs in a high-demand and growing field. Our faculty and staff deserve credit for helping our students reach this milestone.”The exam tests students in five key areas:
- Knowledge: The candidate has a working comprehension of the technical and procedural aspects of laboratory tests.
- Technical Skills: Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis.
- Problem Solving and Decision Making: Recognizes unexpected results and instrument malfunction and takes appropriate action.
- Communication: Provides laboratory information to authorized sources.
- Teaching and Training Responsibilities: Demonstrates laboratory technical skills to other personnel.
“This high pass rate is a major accomplishment for our program and a testament to the quality of our graduates. Southwestern College is proud of our students’ accomplishments and looks forward to training the next generation of MLTs,” program director Luis Nunez said.
Located at the College’s Higher Education Center in National City, Southwestern College’s MLT program prepares students for entry into a technician-level position in a clinical laboratory environment aiding medical diagnosis and patient treatment. (A workshop on opportunities in the field is scheduled for Tuesday, April 26.)
The 18-month program integrates classroom instruction and a 26-week clinical laboratory internship. Nineteen local hospitals and health centers currently serve as clinical laboratory sites for students. Once students complete the program, they are eligible to take the certification exam.
The College’s MLT program is only the second community college program in California to be nationally accredited.
