Southwestern College Now Offering Bachelor of Arts Classes on Main Campus in Chula Vista

Students in College’s Child Development Program Have Opportunity Through New Partnership with National University

CHULA VISTA, CA – Southwestern College today announced that students majoring in its child development program can begin taking classes for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education on its main campus in Chula Vista. The opportunity comes from a new partnership between the College and National University, allowing students to meet the University’s admissions criteria and take upper level courses without yet completing an associate’s degree.

“Even in these tough economic times, we are finding ways to help our students continue their education and begin great careers,” Denise Whittaker, Interim Superintendent/President of Southwestern College, said. “We know students with college degrees have greater opportunities after graduation. This new partnership allows us to begin those opportunities right here at Southwestern College.”

Taught in groups of 15 students, the Program lasts 17 months and includes courses such as Diversity, Development and Education, Early Language and Literacy, and Designing Emergent Curriculum. Students in the Program will participate in:

  • one evening class a month, meeting twice a week;
  • hybrid classes which consist of half online learning and half classroom instruction; and
  • a tutorial session which meets once a week in the department’s tutorial lab.

“The most amazing aspect of this partnership is that it was initiated and created by our students themselves,” Dr. Leslynn Gallo, Chair of Southwestern College’s Child Development Department, said. “Southwestern College’s students are proactive in building their own futures -- and that will lead to greater success.”

Students accepted into the Program, receive 10 percent off the University’s bachelor degree tuition along with eligibility for two scholarships: the California Community College Promising Scholar Award and Transfer to Triumph Scholarship. The Program begins in March 2011.
