Statement by Governing Board President Norma L. Hernandez Regarding College’s Continuing Cooperation with the San Diego District Attorney

Dec. 27, 2011

The Governing Board of the Southwestern Community College District continues to monitor the investigation by the San Diego District Attorney’s Office and continues to provide its full support and cooperation, which began in March of this year. SWCCD will continue to honor the investigative process and will provide any additional information requested by the District Attorney.

In April 2011, at the direction of the Governing Board, the college’s legal counsel hired an independent external forensics audit expert to examine Proposition R construction contracts and other related issues, including issues involving the Southwestern College Educational Foundation.

The college is committed to releasing the findings of the review to the public at its earliest opportunity. The Board will review a report of the findings at its January 11 meeting.

“The Board wishes to thank the college community for its support and patience during this process,” Board President Norma L. Hernandez said. “We appreciate the efforts and contributions of the administration, faculty and staff to review and update district policies related to the contract selection process, ethics and bond expenditures. The year-long effort to review these policies and procedures strives to improve transparency, align the college to existing state codes and laws, and eliminate any appearance of ‘pay to play’.”
