Board Calls Special December Meeting To Consider Next Steps in College’s Superintendent/President Search, Names Vice President Kerns and Suarez Acting Superintendent/President

CHULA VISTA, CA – Following the swearing-in of Trustees Tim Nader, Norma L. Hernandez and Terri Valladolid, the Southwestern College Governing Board went right to work, choosing Tim Nader as Board President, Norma L. Hernandez as Vice President and Vice Presidents Michael Kerns and Angelica Suarez to serve as acting Superintendent/President. Kerns, currently Vice President for Human Resources, will serve from today until Dec. 31; Suarez, currently Vice President for Student Affairs, will serve from Jan. 1 - 19, the date of the Board’s January meeting.

"The Governing Board understands the community expects an open and fair process that identifies the best Superintendent/President for the College," Board President Tim Nader said. "In the meantime, the College is in the hands of able caretakers, allowing us to continue meeting the needs of our students and moving forward with the selection process."

Additional leadership and committee assignments are as follows:

  • Nick Aguilar (Chair) and Dr. Jean Roesch, Policy Committee
  • Norma Hernandez, Board representative to the Southwestern College Foundation
The Board also announced a Special Meeting for Tue., Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the process for selecting an interim Superintendent/President while the College searches for a permanent replacement. Board President Nader appointed Vice President Hernandez and Trustee Valladolid to a special committee to coordinate the search process.

Board Approves New Dean

The Board also approved the hiring of Christine Perri as Dean of the Higher Education Center at National City (HECNC) and Crown Cove Aquatic Center (CCAC). Perri will manage the overall planning, implementation, supervision and coordination of classes and programs at the HEC and CCAC.

"Christine has provided excellent leadership over these past 18-months and is strongly committed to student success," Dr. Mark Meadows, Vice President of Academic Affairs, said. "In her new role, I know she will continue to achieve results."

In October, the CCAC received $7,000 in new state funding from the California Department of Boating and Waterways to provide additional scholarships for San Diego’s youth. The Aquatic Center provides partial and full scholarships to kids who wish to participate in their summer Adventure Day Camp or boating activities.

"It’s with great excitement that I take on my new role at these two centers," Perri said. "I have many goals, including gaining California Postsecondary Education Commission approval for the CCAC and growing both sites. I look forward to working with our great faculty and staff." Perri has worked for Southwestern College since 2001 and served two terms as Acting Dean, as well as Director of the College’s Dental Hygiene Program. Perri holds a Bachelors and Masters Degree from New York University.
