Southwestern College Medical Laboratory Technician Program Receives National AccreditationOnly Second Program In State To Receive Designation
CHULA VISTA, CA – Southwestern College today announced that its Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program received national accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, making it only the second community college program in California to receive the status.
“This is a historic achievement for Southwestern College. We are always working to expand degree and certificate offerings for students – and with this designation, we have achieved that goal,” Dr. Raj K. Chopra, Superintendent/President of Southwestern College, said. “Our MLT can help graduates find good-paying jobs in a high-demand field. Our faculty and staff deserve credit for helping us reach this milestone.”
Located at the College’s Higher Education Center in National City, Southwestern College’s MLT program prepares students for entry into a technician-level position in a clinical laboratory environment aiding medical diagnosis and patient treatment. The 18-month program integrates classroom instruction and a 26-week clinical laboratory internship. Currently 19 local hospitals and health centers serve as the student’s clinical laboratory sites.
“This accomplishment demonstrates that Southwestern College is focused on student success,” Luis A. Nuňez Jr., Medical Laboratory Technician Program Director said. “This milestone sets the MLT program apart, since we are only the second institution in the State of California to earn this designation.”
The MLT program also recently received $48,567 in new funding from the U.S. Department of Labor for its participation in the Biotechnology Clinical Laboratory Consortium Project. The funding will help increase the number of MLT graduates by providing more field training at local hospitals and clinics. It will create new partnerships between Southwestern College and four-year institutions that offer a Clinical Laboratory Science degree.
