Exploring culture and the causes of violence with Jeffrey Bucholtz

Jeffrey S. BucholtzThanks to the Associated Student Organization’s generous support, the brilliant, entertaining, and captivating Jeffrey Bucholtz will be presenting on four topics this semester. 

Jeffrey Bucholtz is a Violence Prevention Specialist and instructor at Southwestern College and SDSU and he will be presenting on the following subjects:

“Feminism and Social Change: A Brief History of Women's Movement in the U.S.”

9:30-10:45 a.m. Tuesday, October 23
Student Union East (east side of cafeteria)

In this thought-provoking presentation, participants will explore the history of U.S. feminism & social justice movements in order to understand how these movements have shaped our culture and can impact its future. 

"Man Up? Pop Culture and (un)Healthy Masculinity"

9:30-10:45 a.m., Thursday, October 25
Student Union East (east side of cafeteria)

This powerful presentation and workshop deconstructs masculinity in popular culture and provides valuable analytical tools for challenging unhealthy social norms. Participants will engage in a cultural analysis of how masculinity is represented, how that representation so frequently has negative repercussions in men’s lives, and how we can create a positive change.

“Men Against Rape—Off the Bench & Into the Game”

9:30-10:45 a.m., Thursday, November 15
Student Union East (east side of cafeteria)

In this engaging, empowering and effective presentation, participants will connect daily behaviors and experiences to both the causes and the solutions to sexual violence.   Sexual violence will continue to flourish until every person accepts his/her responsibility to challenge all forms of hatred, intolerance and oppression.

"Before It Happens: Realistic Strategies for Preventing Relationship Violence"

9:30-10:45 a.m., Thursday, November 29
Student Union East (east side of cafeteria)

This engaging presentation examines how our cultural ideas about relationships (including those in popular culture) lead to relationship violence.  Participants will learn how to take action and change our culture so we can prevent relationship violence before it ever happens.

About Jeff Bucholtz

For the past ten years, Jeffrey S. Bucholtz has worked as an activist and public speaker, providing hundreds of presentations and performances in the fields of sexual violence, masculinity, relationship violence, gender normativity, violence prevention, feminist thought, and the intersectionality of oppression.  Jeff received his Master of Arts in Women’s Studies from San Diego State University. 

Currently, Jeff is the director of his social business, We End Violence, which provides educational materials/lectures, performances, and consulting services to change culture and prevent violence before it happens.

Jeff is also a faculty lecturer at San Diego State University where he teaches Popular Culture and Counseling, and is adjunct faculty at Southwestern College where he teaches Communication.
