Southwestern College Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. at Annual Scholarship BreakfastCHULA VISTA, CA – Southwestern College today celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. at its fourth annual Scholarship Breakfast by awarding five student scholarships. Winners were chosen based on essays addressing King's success in overcoming challenges and the inspiration he provided them to follow in their lives.
"At Southwestern College, we are fulfilling the dream of Dr. King by empowering our students with knowledge and preparing them for success," Dr. Angelica Suarez, Acting Superintendent/President of Southwestern College, said. "We are proud to host this event and will continue our tradition of honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King."
The event, "Retrieving the Dream: Overcoming Challenges," featured remarks from Dr. Timothy J. Winters, Pastor of the Bayview Baptist Church and a performance by local singer Lanee Battle. Today's event was sponsored by the College's African American Alliance.
"The life and teachings of Dr. King serve as an inspiration for our community. He continues to be a role model for our students, staff and faculty," Aaron Starck, President of the College's African American Alliance, said. "This year's scholarship breakfast was another huge success and we are happy to host this event for our community each year."
