Southwestern College Receives More Than $426,000 in New Federal Funding For Child Care Services

Resources Will Help Student-Parents Pursue Degrees, Young Children Learn Critical Skills

CHULA VISTA, CA – Southwestern College today announced $426,200 in new federal funding for its Child Development Center (CDC) to offer childcare stipends to 13 low-income Southwestern College student-parents each semester. The funding will cover the cost of a half-day program for students whose children attend the on-campus facility.

In addition to providing financial assistance, the funds will also help the Center:

  • develop a bi-lingual nutrition and early literacy program and;
  • provide ongoing parent education focusing on topics such as identifying developmental delays and behavioral issues.

The funding comes from The U.S. Department of Education. The Program, which supports the participation of low-income parents in postsecondary education through campus-based child care services, provided a grant for the CDC in 2005.

Located at the College’s main campus in Chula Vista, the Center was established 1998 to provide convenient, affordable services to students and staff of Southwestern College, as well as residents of nearby communities. Along with providing childcare, the Center is the primary resource for Southwestern College students who are studying Child Development and working with children.

For more information, visit the center in Building 2000 or call (619) 216-6695.
