SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE SEARCHES FOR INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT/PRESIDENT

Announces Open Application Period; Candidates Must Have Proven Experience In California, With Accreditation

CHULA VISTA, CA - Southwestern College today announced an open application period for an interim Superintendent/President ending Wednesday, January 5, 2011. The successful candidate must have proven accreditation experience and service in the California Community College system.

"Southwestern College is one of the most important institutions in the South Bay and we need the right leadership to move it forward," Tim Nader, President of the College's Governing Board, said. "We are making progress on accreditation but must begin preparing for the next follow-up report. We are also in one of the toughest budget environments in California history. These are challenges the interim Superintendent/President must help us successfully confront."

At a Special Board Meeting on Tuesday, December 14, the College settled on a process to select an Interim Superintendent/President. The Board's goal is to appoint a candidate at its next regular meeting set for January 19. A complete position description is provided below.

Currently, Vice Presidents Michael Kerns and Angelica Suarez are serving as acting Superintendent/President. Kerns, Vice President for Human Resources, is serving from Dec. 9 until Dec. 31; Suarez, Vice President for Student Affairs, will serve from Jan. 1 - 19, the date of the Board’s January meeting.

Interim Superintendent/President

Southwestern Community College District, located in southern San Diego County, California invites applications for the position of interim Superintendent/President. It is expected that the interim will serve until the search for a permanent hire has been completed, not to exceed one year.

Criteria:

  • Experience in California Community Colleges at the CEO level
  • Proven successful experience with WASC Accreditation
  • Proven experience as a collegial and collaborative leader
  • Known reputation for being a consensus builder
  • In-depth knowledge of AB1725
  • Proven experience in higher education collective bargaining using interest-based bargaining
